Level 1: From 0 to 1,000 Followers
When I asked my audience about their follower count, 73.9% said they had fewer than 1,000 followers. If you’re in this group, you’re not alone. The first 1,000 followers are the hardest to get. But don’t worry; I started the same way, with no clue how to grow an audience and no budget to accelerate the process.
Step 1: Pick One Channel to Grow
One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to grow on too many platforms at once. Instead, focus on one channel that meets two criteria: it’s fast to start creating and fast to improve.
Why LinkedIn or X?
These platforms are my top recommendations because they’re text-based, which means you can start practicing your copywriting skills immediately. You don’t need expensive gear or tools to begin; just a keyboard and internet connection. Plus, LinkedIn currently offers great organic reach, making it easier to stand out.
For example, on LinkedIn, you can leverage the platform’s focus on professional content to quickly establish yourself as an authority in your field. Start by sharing insights, experiences, and tips that are valuable to your target audience. Engage with others by commenting on posts from industry leaders, and don’t be afraid to send connection requests to people who resonate with your content.
On X, the key is consistency and engagement. The platform rewards frequent posting and interaction. Share your thoughts, retweet valuable content, and engage in conversations with others in your niche. This will help you build a following over time.
Step 2: Pick One Topic
To become known and trusted by your audience, you need to focus on one key topic. Choose something that is true to who you are and serves the people you want to reach.
Use the Ikigai Exercise:
This exercise helps you find the sweet spot between what you’re good at, what you love, what the world needs, and what people will pay for. This intersection is your zone of genius, where your passion and expertise meet the needs of your audience.
Once you've identified your core topic, break it down into subtopics or categories. For example, if your main topic is digital marketing, your subtopics might include content strategy, SEO, social media marketing, and analytics. This structure will guide your content creation, ensuring that every post aligns with your brand and serves your audience.
Step 3: Succeed Without a Budget
The final hurdle to reaching 1,000 followers is learning what good content looks like. It’s not about money; it’s about developing an intuition for what works on your chosen platform.
- Find Role Models: Study and imitate successful creators on your platform. Use their content as a blueprint for your own. Analyze their posts to understand what makes them engaging. Is it the way they tell stories, the visuals they use, or the actionable advice they provide? Incorporate these elements into your content while adding your unique voice.
- Establish a Posting Cadence: Consistency is key. Post regularly to build momentum and learn faster. I recommend posting daily on LinkedIn and twice daily on X. The more you post, the more you’ll learn about what resonates with your audience. Use this feedback to refine your content strategy.
- Overcome Limiting Beliefs: Don’t let fear or doubts hold you back. Everyone has a personal brand, whether they realize it or not. Take control of yours by consistently sharing valuable content. Remember, the only way to improve is by doing. Even if your first few posts don’t gain much traction, keep going. Over time, you’ll build confidence and attract more followers.
